For the past few weeks, Kenyans have been introduced to relatively new terms thanks to the Coronavirus.

One term that is on everyone’s lips is self-quarantine.

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has often told those who feel unwell during this period to self-quarantine but do we really know what it entails?

According to the Ministry of Health, it refers to separating yourself for 14 days if you suspect that you may have been exposed to Coronavirus (COVID-19).

You should use that period to monitor if you will develop symptoms.

Who should self-quarantine

Anyone who has travelled within the past 14 days to a country with sustained reported COVID-19 cases or has had close contact with a person showing symptoms

What you should do

  • Stay in separate room and use a separate bathroom if available
  • Disinfect tables, doorknobs, phones
  • Avoid sharing household items like utensils, towels and bedding
  • When you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue and safely dispose it
  • Wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds (sanitise if this is not possible)
  • Wear a face mask if you must be around other people
