SUMMARY

Through the Sonko rescue team, the governor had his people on the ground in Busia county hours after the story came to light in search of the boy.

According to the boy’s mother, the seventh born in a family of nine has been disabled since he was five years old.

Barely a day after the story of a disabled boy, Gilbert Otyeng', who crawled 6km daily to school was highlighted by the Standard, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has intervened.

Through the Sonko rescue team, the governor had his people on the ground in Busia county hours after the story came to light in search of the boy.

The team found the boy and enrolled him to a special school to save him the trouble of accessing education and even offered him a wheelchair.

The class four pupil further had his fees cleared and was given shopping that could last him a term.

According to the boy’s mother, the seventh born in a family of nine has been disabled since he was five years old and things have never been the same again for him.

To arrive at his school the boy had to crawl 1.5km in the morning and evening and the same distance during lunch hours since his mother could not afford food at school.

“It has been a painful experience for me, waking up very early to crawl to school. I have to return home for lunch, go back for afternoon lessons then in the evening I go home,” Otyeng told the Standard.
