If your househelp has not returned, you might be the problem

News

Househelps or house managers as they are referred to nowadays play a key role in our homes.

From washing utensils, doing laundry and cooking to picking our children from school, they often start their day very early in the morning and sleep very late.

But we pay them after all, right? Well, over the Christmas period, most employers gave their househelps a much-deserved break to visit their families upcountry.

A neighbour of mine was complaining the other day that her househelp is yet to return, five days after the agreed date.

She was all ‘stressed’ and confused, critically thinking of her next step. She went on to rant how Truphena (not her real name) is ungrateful.

During this conversation, I could not help but think maybe the housegirl was not at fault.

The truth is, as employers, we overwork these ladies and barely give them space to breathe. When we see them resting on the couch, we suddenly remember that the ceiling needs to be cleaned!

They are humans after all and they also get tired. Some of them take up such jobs because of the problems they are facing at home and instead of engaging in not so decent professions, they opt to earn a living through taking care of the home.

Videos of househelps mistreating their employers’ children are not new but we must admit that some of them are actually diligent in their work and we fail to appreciate them.

Last week, a couple in South Africa gifted their househelp a three-bedroom house for her 16 years of exceptional service. We should have more such stories.

A little introspection will go a long way in determining whether you are treating your househelp well.

Do not always shout at them, do not beat them up, try to reason out stuff with them and teach them how you want your chores done.

That way, you will have a healthier home and you will not have to worry that she will not return even when she goes out to pick a phone call.
