Guests during Jamhuri day celebrations in one of the counties had a first-hand experience with famed austerity measures introduced by the Governor.

Those who attended the fete hoping that they could go home with full bellies left a disappointed lot after the food that had been prepared got finished. Drinks too were exhausted before the function ended.

A little birdie whispered to the Grapevine that the county chief, who has banned foreign trips and holding meetings out of the region so as to cut costs, outlawed lavish spending on food and drinks during national days.

At the ceremony, locals joked that only ‘one emaciated cow’ was slaughtered for the hundreds of guests who turned up for the event, in line with the cutting cost mantra of the county boss, who is doing his first term in office

Early this year, MCAs and other top county employees in the devolved unit complained that they were left to ‘starve’ during an official function.

They were served only a boiled egg and tea. To beat the Hunger pangs, the officials thronged a nearby canteen to buy bread.
