Ethiopian PM doing push-ups
SUMMARY

The PM made them aware that they had violated military protocol

It is not clear why the PM did push-ups with the soldiers but sources indicate he had ordered them to give him 20

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday did press-ups with protesting soldiers who had walked to his office demanding better pay.

Some of the soldiers were armed but were only allowed inside the premier’s compound after being disarmed.

Reports indicate that the situation was not as innocent as it looked although Ahmed’s action defused the protests.

The PM made them aware that they had violated military protocol and by the time he was doing the push-ups, all of them had smiles on their faces.

According to the Ethiopia News Agency (ENA), the soldiers had been sent to quell ethnic clashes on the capital's outskirts but felt that only the PM could address their grievances.

Abiy's chief of staff Fitsum Arega revealed that the prime minister had listened to them, reprimanded them for wrong procedure but the meeting was fruitful.

It is not clear why the PM did push-ups with the soldiers but sources indicate he had ordered them to give him 20 for not following the right procedure to address their issues.
