SUMMARY

There was a heated debated in parliament between the Male MPs and Sabina Chege over her dressing code

Sabina, who was dressed in a white short sleeved top, defended herself

There was a heated debated in parliament on Wednesday 22 August between the male Members of Parliament and Murang’a Woman Representative, Sabina Chege after the MPs complained of her ‘inappropriate’ dressing code.

One of the people who complained about Sabina’s dressing was Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo, who said he understood that it was her birthday and that she wanted to stand out.

"Is it in order for Sabina and Millie Odhiambo in a manner of dressing although for Sabina I understand today is her big day. Is that really the dress code for Parliament? Is it really parliamentary?" asked Maanzo.

Sabina, who was dressed in a white short sleeved top, defended herself saying that Maanzo wanted to get her attention.

" I do not know what is wrong with Maanzo. Yes it is my birthday today. And he wished to wish me a happy birthday. I have got his attention and I think that is what he wanted," Sabina defended herself.

Minority Leader in the National Assembly, John Mbadi and National Assembly Majority Leader, Aden Duale, also joined in the conversation to fault Sabina’s dressing.

“She is inappropriately dressed for the House. She has exposed her arms, and comes across as someone dressed for a birthday party. Should I come to the House sporting a short-sleeved shirt tomorrow, would you allow me in the House, Mr Speaker? I want to urge you to ask Honorable Sabina to go and dress appropriately for being in the House,” said Mbadi.

“According to the dress code for lawmakers, women should wear clothes that are modest. What Honorable Sabina is wearing is not appropriate,” said Mr. Duale.

However, Deputy Speaker Cheboi decided to end the debate and gave his ruling concerning Sabina’s dressing.

“Members of the press and the National Assembly must be properly dressed; male MPs must wear collared long-sleeved shirts; a tie, a pair of socks and shoes. Women, on the other hand, should wear clothes that are decent, formal, and are of business-wear nature.”

“I am looking at Honorable Sabina Chege, and though she has exposed her arms as Mr Mbadi said, she seems to have dressed in a formal and business manner. It depends on how the persons looking at her have chosen to… you know? From where I sit, I find that Honorable Sabina Chege, though she can dress better, is dressed appropriately for House business,” ruled Mr Cheboi.
