Tributes pour in as Arsene Wenger brings the curtains down

Players, managers and pundits have been paying their tributes to the 68-year-old in the wake of the statement he released that he will step down as an Arsenal gaffer in the of 2017/18 season.

Here are some of the tributes from the iconic figures in football;

Sir Alex Ferguson: "I am really happy for Arsene Wenger. I have great respect for him and for the job he has done at Arsenal. It is great testament to his talent, professionalism and determination that he has been able to dedicate 22 years of his life to a job that he loves. In an era where football managers sometimes only last one or two seasons, it shows what an achievement it is to serve that length of time at a club the size of Arsenal. I am pleased that he has announced he is leaving at this stage of the season, as he can now have the send-off that he truly deserves. He is, without doubt, one of the greatest Premier League managers and I am proud to have been a rival, a colleague and a friend to such a great man."

Jupp Heynckes: "He has completed a magnificent career as a coach, in France and in England. He achieved lots of successes and his teams played attractive football predominantly.

He was one of the top managers in European football. I do not know if he wants to do this anymore, I cannot imagine this. Actually, he does not need this anymore. He had an amazing career."

Jose Mourinho: "If he’s happy I’m happy if he’s sad, I’m sad, I always wish the best for my opponents.

I always wish the best, so for me, that’s the point if he’s happy with the decision he makes and looks forward to the next chapter of his career and his life I’m really happy for him."

Nwankwo Kanu: "Big shoes for anyone to fill, playing for Arsenal under Arsene was one of the best period of my career - two premiership, two FA cups, the invincibles, playing with some of the best-assembled players."

Cesc Fabregas: "I never expected that but it shows the great dignity and class of the man. I will never forget his guidance and support, his tutelage and mentorship.

He had faith in me from day one and I owe him a lot, he was like a father figure to me who always pushed me to be the best. Arsene, you deserve all the respect and happiness in the world. #classact"

Robin Van Persie: "Thanks Arsene for all your confidence in me over the years. You are a very special man & a top coach! Definitely one of the very best ever!

I will always see you as my footballing father where under your guidance I had the chance to grow as a man and a player, I'm forever thankful for that and wish you all the very best for the next chapter in your life! "
