SUMMARY

A university campus will be established in Nanyuki, the leaders of Laikipia North and Laikipia East sub-counties have resolved.

Education stakeholders and area leaders who had a consultative meeting in Nanyuki at the weekend also decided that a fully-fledged university to serve the region should be constructed at Naibor, Laikipia North.

Among those who attended the meeting were Margaret Lesuuda, the Ministry of Education regional director, Patrick Gichohi, a commissioner of the Public Service Commission, Yusuf Jilo, the county director of education, and officers from both the county and national governments.

Deputy Governor John Mwaniki who will chair the 10-member committee, said the idea was long overdue, adding that some Form Four leavers from far-flung areas such as Lonienk and Doldol in Laikipia North cannot afford to join university.

"Establishment of the campus will provide an opportunity particularly to pastoral communities who are disadvantaged by lack of a single campus near them," said Mr Mwaniki.

He added that there was a need for improved basic infrastructure in both primary and secondary schools to produce students to join the campus.

Basic infrastructure

The campus would save Form Four leavers and those who want to pursue higher education the trouble of travelling long distances in search of a university education.

Those from Nanyuki and neighbouring go to universities in Nyeri, Meru, or Nairobi.
