There’s a new KU graduate in town. What makes the ex-senior cop’s graduation special is the circumstances surrounding his feat. Dickson Munene from Kangema, Murang’a County, is in Kamiti serving life in prison for murder.

Munene was feted for academic excellence at Kenyatta University where he graduated with Masters of Business Administration- Entrepreneurship option, despite facing a myriad of challenges.

The former Inspector of Police is also pursuing a law degree at the Kenyatta University Digital School of Virtual Learning. He was sentenced to death on February 28, 2014 after the Court of Appeal upheld a death sentence handed by the High Court, and acquitted businessman Alex Chepkonga with whom they had been sentenced to hang. Munene is now the most educated inmate in the country.

Munene is the only inmate in the country with such an academic achievement.

“Winning people’s hearts and giving hope to fellow inmates is my driving force,” he said, adding that, “I always pray for the deceased family and ask God to guide them. I hope one day, God willing, I will be able to talk to them.”

Munene is now looking forward to his PhD.
