The cruelty of bachelorhood

When a baby boy is born, many in the society become very happy and have high expectations for him. In the traditional setup, the child inherits the name of one of the relatives who either had passed on and successful, have good behaviors or is still alive but respected. This chain is passed to the next generation especially in remembrance of such people. Many parents would wish to bring up their children in a good way to enable them adopt good morals that would be beneficial in their future lives. With respect and honor the welcoming routine doesn’t stop especially if one is from an urban setup and travels to the rural home place to visit relatives. The family relationship is considered more important than anything else. Having a grandparent would be an advantage to the young, from the wise sayings and teachings that enlighten the young.

I remember traveling home to familiarize myself with relatives for the first time. Free tour guard services of showing me the village landscape was such a good experience to me. At the age of 10, anyone would expect my age mates to take up the task of walking with me in the village. Surprisingly, my grandma agreed to take up the task. With over 80 years staying in the village she has a broad knowledge of the village terrain and names of the residents at her fingertips. How would you feel if your grandma calls you ‘my husband’ before people? It leaves you with shame and surprise.

How would a young man who doesn’t know about relationships be part of it? It takes time to adopt and learn much more of the life skills to finally be able to reach that stage. A man would wish that he gets the honor to enable him live comfortably in the society. The honor comes about when he is recognized as a father to someone and has a partner to call a wife. However, the stage of bachelorhood is faced by everyone to enable him or her learn a lot. This stage is a big blow to every man since laundry work, cooking, choosing right partner and much more work that a lady man be of help faces him.

With over 18 years in life, expectations of many is that the man becomes self-dependent and probably have an income generating job. With high rate of unemployment, life becomes a pricking thorn and the man has to rely much on parents, expect clothing, food and shelter. John Mwangi a 30 year old says he faces challenges in terms of normal house chores. Moreover, he has to sweat to get daily income having been considered an adult. Mwangi curses his bachelor life and wishes to move a step forward to curb all the current challenges. "My friends have married and I rarely have time with them because we are not of same level, " Mwangi says.

Many youths at this stage resort to easy ways of getting income to avoid the shame they face in the environs that they live in. The cruelty of bachelorhood can however not be done away with, being a rite of passage for every man since no one is born while married.
