Female university student dies in neglect resulting from nurses' strike

Police in Bondo town are keeping vigil at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science Technology following ugly demonstrations by the institution’s students over the death of a female colleague who they say died out of neglect.

The female student, who has been reported to have died on Saturday resides at private hostels with her partner and had headache before she went to Bondo Sub-county hospital but transferred to Owens hospital due to lack of lack of medical attention.

The ongoing nurses’ strike is believed to have occasion the neglect that forced her to move to a private hospital and succumbed to the illness.

Her death had angered the JOUST students who held a demonstrations and destroyed properties before barricading the road as they engaged police in unrest quelling battles.

Bondo OCPD Paul Kiarie confirmed that the mysterious death of the female student and that of a male student reported to have lost his life on Saturday morning at Siaya Referral hospital triggered the unrest.

The officers deployed had contained the situation and calm was on steady restoration at the university.
