PRIORITIZE SECURITY OVER POLITICS

One of the major benefits of democracy is that politics impacts policy, even our own national security. Elections, political battles means nothing if they can’t be sustained in a peaceful manner. Security is the backbone of all democracies and it should be the primary concern in any system of governance.

Security is not just about feeling safe, it’s about people knowing that their government has mechanisms in place to ensure that all citizens are safe and they are adequately prepared to tackle and prevent threats likes’ terrorism from recurring.

Previous terror attacks led to massive loss of Kenyan lives, a tragedy largely blamed on the poor coordination and organisation of our top most security agencies at the time.

National security professionals would, therefore, be wise to keep an eye on not just external threats but what political candidates say in their rallies. We don’t want a repeat of post-election violence witnessed in 2007 if any lessons were learned from what happened.

Insecurity is not only limited to external threats alone. Crimes are being planned and executed from within and it’s up to our security agencies to be on watch. The government has invested heavily in security mechanisms and equipment around the country.

Is it our duty to question the level of preparedness our security agencies have? Do they know how the use the equipment or are they just for display? Having proper machinery is one thing, manipulating them successfully is another?

We are in a political season, elections around the corner. Many are concerned about who gets elected rather than having the elections in a peaceful environment.

Terrorists don't sleep nor slumber and it us who feel the pain and agony of losing our loved ones, when such tragedies occur. We are in an election mood, yes, but that should not make relax.

Our security agencies can’t protect us alone, we should be vigilant and report any suspicious activities around us.Safety is all about coordination and organisation of tasks. It’s mandatory we work together to create a safe environment for all Kenyans
