Francesco Totti has retired from playing football.
The 40 year old played his final match for Roma coming on as a substitute in the 54th minute of their 3-2 win over Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico as Roma secured a champions League spot.
He however stated that he is not ready to accept his career is over. He is considered as one of the greatest players of all time and one of the talented players of his generation. He was a creative offensive player renowned for his technique, vision and goal scoring ability.
The Italian great ends his career after 25 years and 786 games in an emotional farewell. He had a 25 season career with his hometown club. Loyalty is a word well known to him as he appeared in 786 matches in all competition with Roma, coming third to Paolo Maldini 902 with ac Milan and Javier Zaneti 858 with inter Milan for most games with a single club in Italy.
He made his debut in 1993 as a 16 year old for As Roma and became the youngest ever captain at 22 years old in 1998. His career end with 250 goals in Serie A, second to Silvio Piola who had 274 goals but Totti holds the record for most goals scored in Serie A while playing for a single club. He is the fifth highest scoring Italian player with 316 goals.
He also played for his country Italy winning the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. His other titles include a Serie A title, Two Coppa Italia titles and two Supercoppa Italian titles. He is the most capped player in the Roma’s history and the clubs top goal scorer.
He will go into managerial position in the club. He is set to become the sports director at the club as from next season.
He may not have won the Champions league or Ballon D' Or but he definitely won the respect of football fans around the world
