Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has ordered all County Directors of Education to ensure there is no canning in public schools. He warned any education officials sleeping on the job that they will not be spared. He also said some school principals are taking advantage of failure by some county directors to supervise institutions to charge excessive fees.

‘’When you hear some parents complaining of excessive fees being charged yet we have the laid down guidelines, the blame should be on the County Directors Education who continue to remain in office instead of being in the field supervising the head teachers and principals,” he said.

The CS directed that county directors will be required to be in the field three days a week and rest attending meetings or other relevant matters.

‘’From now on I want to see senior education officers assigned to field duties interact with children, teachers and parents in their respective schools in order to get first hard information on problems such institutions were faced with,” he said.

Speaking at Gathuthini mixed Day secondary school in Kirinyaga County yesterday, Dr Matiang’i warned teachers still administering corporal punishment, citing the recent incident in Nyeri County where a child was allegedly caned to death by a teacher.

I am shocked that some teachers keep on repeating these mistakes yet corporal punishment is outlawed in our schools,’’ he said. The CS donated Sh15 million to the school and 30 computers.
