Uhuru, Raila only concerned about their personal interests

By Ben Odiwuor | May 7th 2016

Raila Amolo Odinga, Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, William Samoei Ruto…wow! What names. Names which when mentioned cause an aura of sycophantic frenzy.

Much like the mention of a prophet, or coming of the Messiah. Human beings like you and me, but are they?

God made all men equal, but there is an alter opinion that some men are ‘more equal’ than others. True, but false. But that’s a story for another day…back to the huge names that make men squeal like women in a Justin Beiber concert.

A supporter will say that he (he referring to whichever political demagogue that tickles their political nether regions) is one of ours.

He is our ultimate defender. He will lead us to the proverbial land of milk and honey. He is going to alleviate us above the poverty line, and if not possible, lower that poverty line (absurd? not really!).

He will wash our feet like Jesus washed His disciples feet, and he will deliver everything we ask for.

Well isn’t that cute, BUT ITS WRONG!!! (For those who spent most of their childhood mornings watching cartoons, kindly refer to Cow and Chicken).

This is a pre-conception that we, the electorate, need to get rid of. Herein comes a theory that I have been drafting for years; the Personal Interests Theory. So what is this theory?

I will explain shortly, but first, a short story. Last week, I attended a funeral marred with political connotations, so much so that it turned into a political rally.

This was my first of such, and I was really appalled to say the least. The obscene language, the trolling, the violence and those obsequious supporters that had no idea they were attending a funeral.

Afterwards, I had a discussion with a career diplomat, with whom I shared my Personal Interests Theory. He only asked one question “…and you are knowing this now?” (Pardon the grammar).

It’s simple. All politicians are only concerned about their personal interests. All, yes, I said ALL. It just so happens that if your interests are aligned with theirs, then you will benefit. If not, then you will cry till you die.

If he is leading you to the land of milk and honey, rest assured he has already grabbed the bulk of that land.

If he is washing your feet, rest assured he has landed the sole tender of disposing off the dirty water. If he is defending you, rest assured, well, he has a Landrover Defender (sorry, my creativity ran out).

The sad part is that you cannot blame them. Human beings are pre-conditioned to always cater to their personal interests.

Even those, in the words of one Kenneth Otiato Marende, who are sufficiently philanthropic, are doing so due to their personal interests.

The most basic example is of a biblical nature. Jesus says that we need to live a righteous life, according to God’s word, so as to enter the kingdom of God.

Which begs the question, that Christian who is helping the less fortunate, is he/she doing so for the less fortunate, or so that he/she can enter the kingdom of God? See, the Personal Interests Theory strikes again!

So, if your nickname is not Jakom or Kamwana, and the likes, it is high time you sat down, and thought deep and hard, what your personal interests are.

Then vote accordingly. Simple. Simpler than ABC methinks. Otherwise, and I repeat, you will cry till you die!
