What proponents of gay marriage should know?

France has just become the 14th country to legalise gay marriage. In Kenya, 11 girls were last week charged with bestiality in Mombasa for practising unethical acts with a canine.

This week, a group came forward to claim the so called 'gay rights' arguing that because they are endangered minority species, they may soon become extinct so they should legally be allowed to flourish.

If one is opposed to legalise gay marriage, it is automatically assumed that the opposition rests on a basis of hate, homophobia, or other such negative motivations.

Indeed, opposition to gay marriage in some Western countries has such a negative connotation because advocates have successfully framed the issue as one of equal rights. By this logic, they argue that if you oppose gay marriage, you are opposed to equal rights for everyone.

To ban gay marriages would, in their minds, be discrimination. However, gay marriage is not a civil rights issue; it is a question of common sense. It should be obvious, by this point, which category gay marriage falls into. Same-sex couples are unable to procreate, meaning that there is no compelling interest to subsidise their marriages. God did not create minorities, and the gay issue cannot be classified in such categories.

There are, in fact, legitimate, substantive reasons as to why gay marriage should not be legalized.

Legalising gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behaviour. As seen in Mombasa last week, people may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage contract. Perhaps, the Mombasa girls had been brainwashed by their Swedish boss that 'dog-style' means unethical sexual acts like 'live' with the real canine.

Homosexuality is strange. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. For if we were all gays, who will be reading this article?

Gays argue that they can adopt children. Who will be willing to sign a contract to reproduce children for gay adoption in a child-making factory? The rationale is that males and females, when married, are more likely to procreate, thus ensuring the continuation of society.

If all countries legalise gay marriages, there will be no heterosexual marriages. This means there will be no children and the world will have no human beings left, at least at some point.

Homosexuality is generally against all religions and cultural values all over the world. In Christianity, God created Adam then Eve. God could as well have created a man for Adam, perhaps Harry, Dick or Tom; or perhaps a dog for Adam. But He created a woman for Adam, for He saw it was good.

Obviously gay parents will raise gay children, because they will be their role models. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that peer pressure from bad company can make you a victim.

Regarding families where the father is absent, research by University of Canterbury Professor Bruce J Ellis has shown that, “greater exposure to father absence was strongly associated with elevated risk for early sexual activity and adolescent pregnancy.” This is relevant to the debate around same-sex marriage because, in lesbian couples, any daughter would certainly be growing up apart from their biological father, thus increasing the risk of these unfortunate effects.

Further evidence on the importance of having both a mother and father is provided by Stanford psychologist Eleanor MacCoby, who points out that “mothers, on average, may have somewhat stronger parental ‘instincts’ when it comes to responding to young infants.” An increasing body of evidence shows that it is indeed more advantageous for children to grow up having both a mother and a father.

If gays argue that anyone can marry whomever he wants, why then are there laws forbidding first cousins from marrying, brothers and sisters from marrying, parents and offspring from marrying, and people from marrying animals, inanimate objects, or multiple other individuals?

This is because it is not in the interest of governments to encourage these types of marriages. Similarly, it has never been in the interest of God, society, religions and acceptable cultural values for existence of gays. It is thus unacceptable that their 'rights' and marriages should be allowed to flourish.
