Dr Loice Ombajo, a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi and Head of Infectious Disease Unit at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), on Thursday stated that there is a high likelihood that a significant percentage of the population will get the Coronavirus.

Speaking during an interview on a local TV station, Dr Ombajo said that the virus might overwhelm us soon.

“Many of us will probably get infected eventually… We can only hope we will be asymptomatic.

“The reopening is a sad point for me. COVID-19 may potentially overwhelm us soon,” she remarked.

Ever since the country was reopened, the number of infections have been on the rise, something the Ministry of Health says was expected.

While giving the daily Covid-19 update in Nakuru on Thursday, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said that President Uhuru Kenyatta gave a go-ahead to reopen the economy not because the country had contained the virus but because he believed Kenyans had developed a sense of responsibility.

Asked whether the country might go back to a lockdown, Kagwe said the numbers being recorded at the moment were expected but asked Kenyans to adhere to the guidelines issue.

“By opening up the country we believed that Kenyans had attained a level of responsibility. You asked for freedom and we gave it you.

“But freedom comes with consequences,” he remarked.

This comes as the country recorded 421 new cases, taking the national tally to 11673.
