Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Wednesday arrested three members of a notorious car-theft syndicate that is behind a number of criminal activities in the South Rift region.

Over 11 cases of car theft had been reported within the area and detectives immediately swung into action.

“Detectives pursuing the cases today recovered five stolen m/vehicles in different parts of Transzoia County.

“Three suspects found in possession of three of the said motor vehicles were arrested within Kitale, while one vehicle was found at a car wash in Kiminini and the fifth one in Matunda,” read a tweet by DCI.

It also emerged that last week, detectives spotted a suspicious Nissan Wingroad along Sotik-Kericho road with three occupants, who defied orders to stop hence tripping a chase.

Two suspects jumped out of the vehicle and took off on foot but the suspected mastermind, Aaron Kibet Chepkwony, arrested.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from a Matunda-based police officer, while parked at a parking lot, after which fake number plates were fixed.

DCI added that the gang specializes in using fake registration plates before selling the vehicles and urged those whose cars have been stolen recently to report to their offices in Kitale with proof of ownership.
