Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has maintained that his scheduled Chemistry revision class on Friday will go ahead as planned despite a warning from the Ministry of Education.

On Thursday, while appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Education, PS Belio Kipsang stated that anyone offering to teach students without proper qualification is committing an illegality.

“Anybody who is offering to teach students without being qualified is undertaking an illegality, and so is anyone circulating e-learning information that is not approved by KICD.

“All the content of learning delivered to students must be approved by the KICD, whether for online learning or physical learning. And every teacher must be qualified,” said Dr. Kipsang.

On his part, Babu said his class would go on as planned and urged parents to give their children smartphones and bundles.

Last week, Babu took candidates through Mathematics revision and many were impressed by his delivery although some faulted him for not explaining some principles.

The lawmaker vowed to help students during this period due to the closure of schools and uncertainty surrounding their reopening.

Elsewhere, Education CS Prof George Magoha maintained that when schools open the syllabus will start from where it stopped although the next holiday (August) might be shorter.

While speaking to the Parliamentary Committee on Education, the CS expressed confidence that teachers will cover the syllabus in good time.

“When schools open, the syllabus will start from where it stopped. Our teachers are good and if they focus on the children who perhaps didn’t have the benefit of using e-learning at home, they will be able to cover the syllabus quickly,” he reiterated.

Magoha also stated that it is not possible to determine when schools will reopen due to the unpredictable nature of the Coronavirus.
