DCI gun down robbers who killed student, took hostage hospital staff in Umoja

A 24-year-old Meru university student was shot dead by robbery with violence suspects on Monday, April 27, at the Phadam Hospital in Umoja phase II, Nairobi.

According to the DCI, besides killing Rogers Opiyo, the two robbers also took hostage a doctor, two security guards, receptionist and two patients and robbed them off their valuables.

After putting a tail on them, the DCI, on Wednesday, April 29, traced the robbery with violence suspects in Ruiru.

Upon sighting the detectives, the two robbers shot and injured two other civilians as they tried to escape in a motorbike.

The detectives however, caught up and gunned down the robbers at Kona area along Eastern bypass after they dumped the motorbike and tried jumping over the perimeter fence to Gichea farm.

“A chase ensued where they abandoned the bike & jumped over the perimeter fence to Gichea farm amidst the shootout which culminated in their death.

“One pistol with two rounds of ammunitions was recovered & search for the other pistol thrown away during the confrontation is ongoing,” stated the DCI.

The DCI also added that one of the robbery suspects was arrested and arraigned in court in 2018 for the same offence, robbery with violence, but he was released on bond and did not show up in court again.

An arrest warrant was issued by the Madaraka Law Court, which saw the robbery suspect get arrested for contempt of court. He was once again released and disappeared.

The DCI further advised any Kenyan in possession of firearms to surrender them to the nearest police station failure to which will result to consequences.

“The DCI warns any unlicensed persons having in their possession any firearms to surrender the same to their nearest police stations, as solid legal measures will be taken against those in defiance,” said the DCI.
