An Army soldier has killed at least 12 people in a mass shooting and taken hostages inside a shopping mall while live-streaming sick videos taunting his victims and police.

It is still an active shooter situation with the sergeant, armed with an assault rifle, still at large and holed up inside the Terminal 21 shopping centre in Korat in north-eastern Thailand.

The gunman - who first killed his commander and two others at a military base - has taken about 20 hostages on the fourth floor and Thai special forces are preparing to storm the building, it is reported.

In one post on Facebook he wrote that he was seeking "revenge".

Wearing a military helmet and uniform, the suspect said in one chilling video clip that he was exhausted from shooting his victims during the ongoing massacre.

He said: "I’m tired now. I can’t move my finger anymore."

Horrifying footage captured by witnesses shows the gunman firing a number of rounds into a crowd as people flee in terror at about 6.30pm local time on Saturday.

Rapid bursts of gunfire are heard in video posted online by a witness in Korat, also known as Nakhon Ratchasima.

It shows people running for their lives and others ducking amid heavy gunfire.

Another video clip shows a wounded man being helped inside the shopping centre.

The dead are said to include a child, taxi drivers and a student.

The soldier is reported to have shot and killed his commander and two others at a military base before stealing a vehicle and driving into Korat, where he began killing civilians at random.

The gunman then entered the mall and began shooting more victims.

The suspect has posted chilling selfies showing him in front of the fire outside the mall and holding a rifle.

Another image shows a .44-calibre Magnum with an amulet wrapped around it.
