A 25-year-old man has been arrested for raping a five-year-old girl on the grounds of the US embassy in Delhi, India.

Both the victim and the accused live on the embassy premises.

The man was arrested on Sunday at his home after police received a complaint from the girl's mother.

Doctors have confirmed the girl was raped. She is now in a stable condition.

The assault occurred on Saturday morning when the man noticed the girl playing outside her house.

"He lured her to his own house and raped her there," said Eish Singhal, the deputy commissioner of police.

The accused lives on the embassy grounds with his parents in the staff quarters as his father works as a housekeeper there.

The man - who has not been named to protect the identity of the victims - works as a driver but is not employed by the embassy.

The girl and her family also live on the premises of the embassy, where her father works as housekeeping staff.

After the incident, the girl returned home and told her mother who immediately took her to a private clinic for treatment.

The accused, who knows the girl and her family well, had not expected repercussions for his actions.

“The suspect didn’t even expect that the girl would inform her parents or that anyone would approach the police,” Mr Singhal said.

He added: "He wasn’t expecting that his crime would lead to police action.”

The US embassy is situated in Chanakyapuri, a diplomatic enclave of New Delhi, where most of the world's embassies are located.

India has been riddled with rape cases with more than 32,500 cases registered with the police in 2017, totaling around 90 a day, according to Reuters.
