A pair of twins were born "decades apart" after they were delivered within 30 minutes of each other on New Year’s Eve.

Proud parents Dawn Gilliam and Jason Tello say they are "speechless" after their babies arrived just as the new year was heralded in.

Little Joslyn was born on 11.37pm on December 31, 2019, while her brother Jaxon came at 12.07am on January 1, 2020, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Carmel, Indiana, US.

The siblings weren't supposed to arrive until February 19, making them nearly two months early to the party.

“We're still kind of overwhelmed. We're kind of speechless still", father Jason Tello told reporters.

In November, Gilliam was told she might need to deliver as early as Thanksgiving due to a scare over her blood pressure.

The couple made an unplanned trip to the hospital on New Year's Eve due to concern about a lack of foetal movement.

Doctors told the couple that the babies would have to be delivered immediately after a close check-up.

“They were like, ‘You might have to deliver today',” Gilliam told the Indianapolis Star.

The couple already knew that Joslyn was going to be born first.

“She's been in position for most of the pregnancy," she said. "Of course, he was breech. So, it took a while for him to come."

Joslyn was born four pounds and 11 ounces, and her little brother came into the world at four pounds, five ounces.

“Earlier, we talked about it would be great to have them born on different dates," Tello told reporters. "But here we are with this surprise - different dates, different years. That was definitely interesting for us for sure."

"I guess it doesn't click that, 'Wow! We had two babies.' I'm like, 'Wow! There's actually two,’” Gilliam told WBNS.

Joslyn and Jaxon were both on feeding tubes but were doing well and are expected to return home in the near future.

Gilliam says she will continue as a stay-at-home mum where she will look after her two boys, aged 10 and five.
