Deputy President William Ruto on Sunday, December 22, 2019, responded for the first time since Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua accused him of threatening his life.

Speaking in Busia County, Ruto downplayed the accusations by making a joke about the issue.

One of the reasons the Machakos Governor gave for his suspicion was the manner in which he deputy President greeted and looked at him.

Mutua explained that the Deputy President held his hand firmly in a manner intended to hurt him.

Ruto said that the handshake between him and Governor Mutua was nothing compared to a handshake he had received from a local in Busia.

“Yule jamaa mwingine mliskia alilalamika juzi, ati nilimsalimia…ati nilifanya nini…(laughs)…ati nilimsalimia tu nikamwangalia, akakimbia kunishtaki kwa polisi”

“Kama angesalimiwa na huyu jamaa amekuwa akikoroga pot hapa si angekimbia Hague…” he said.

Governor Alfred Mutua on Monday, December 16, 2019, recorded a statement at the Kilimani police station's Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) offices.

After recording the statement, Mutua told journalists that those who were after his life include, Deputy President William Ruto, Senate majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen and National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale.

He said that the threats were based on claims that he attacks the Deputy President.
