Leading telecommunication company Safaricom on Wednesday announced that Kenyan marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge will be on the M-Pesa logo for the next seven days as he attempts to run the marathon in under two hours.

As part of the company’s commitment and respect to the icon, the new logo will have the name “Eliud” and the numbers “1:59” to denote the INEOS challenge.

The challenge will take place in Vienna this weekend and Kipchoge began his preparations yesterday with a number of his pacemakers.

Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph noted that Eliud is an M-Pesa brand ambassador and he will help to take the brand to more people.

“Kipchoge is a befitting ambassador for our M-PESA Global service, which now enables anyone to send or receive money through M-PESA, anywhere in the world.

“At the same time, we are also taking advantage of this unique window in history to support the great marathoner, and to equally empower Kenyans in supporting Kipchoge,” said Joseph.

He further lauded the athlete’s bravery to attempt to run the marathon in under two hours, describing it as a ‘super-human’ fete.

“In a few days he (Kipchoge) will be taking a challenge to do what has never been accomplished before. In a race against the clock, Kipchoge will attempt to run a full marathon in 1 hour and 59 minutes.

“This is a super-human fete that takes great talent and effort to even accomplish. In this regard, we will be going beyond having Kipchoge as our ambassador; Equally, Safaricom will also become his ambassador.

“To show our commitment and respect to our icon, we will be changing our M-PESA brand for the next 7 days,” added the CEO.

Harambee Stars captain and Tottenham midfielder Victor Wanyama also took the opportunity to wish Kipchoge the best of luck urging him to achieve what no other athlete has managed to do.

“Let me take this earliest opportunity to wish my friend and countryman Kipchoge the best in the

@INEOS159 in Vienna Austria this weekend.

“I believe you in your capability will run that marathon in 1:59 bro,” wrote Wanyama.
