International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on Monday 7 October, fired their employee who hurled insults at Kenyan security guards at the Lavington Mall, Nairobi.

The issue which was first raised by Yebeltal Getachew through his Twitter handle was picked up by the Secretary of Innovation, Digital and Diaspora Communication in the office of the president, Dennis Itumbi, who called for action.

In his Twitter post, Itumbi says the man referred to a lady who was trying to calm him down, as a monkey.

“A concerned lady whose only interest was to protect the good name of your organization tried to calm him down, and he dismissed her as a Monkey,” said Itumbi.

The ICRC responded and confirmed that indeed, the man in the photo was their staff, and the vehicle belonged to the company.

“We confirm that this is our staff and vehicle. We do not condone insulting behavior and racism by our staff. We are investigating the matter and will take the necessary action. Apologies to those involved,” the ICRC responded.

A few hours later, the ICRC released a statement saying that the man’s assignment in Kenya has been terminated.

“Yesterday, we received reports of offensive behavior and abusive language by one of our staff at Lavington Mall. Today we met with the witnesses as part of our investigation. As of this evening, the person’s assignment in Kenya has been terminated,” read part of the statement.

The ICRC thanked everyone who brought forth the issue and made time to meet with them as they did their investigations.

“We appreciate those who came forward and reported the incident, especially those who made time to meet with our team. The ICRC has a long presence in Kenya, one that has been made possible by our relationships with the public, Kenyan authorities, our partners at the Kenya Red Cross, our dedicated staff, and above all, the communities we are here to serve.”
