Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa on Thursday stated that it will be a shame if President Uhuru Kenyatta makes his way to Mombasa to mark Mashujaa Day celebrations later this month yet the victims of the Likoni tragedy are yet to be retrieved.

Speaking during an interview at her office, Jumwa said that the Kenya Navy should have extended a helping hand to ensure the bodies of the deceased are removed from the water.

“It is disheartening that a woman and her daughter are still 60m deep. It will be a shame if the President will come all the way (for Mashujaa Day) yet the bodies are yet to be retrieved.

“There is nothing to celebrate. As the Commander-in-Chief, kindly give an order or consider rescheduling the event,” said the MP.

Adding that the Head of State should go to Mombasa to mourn and not to celebrate.

She also asked President Kenyatta to fire all those who have failed him during this tragedy due to incompetence.

Jumwa also requested the government to consider recruiting some beach boys to the navy since they are used to the ocean and have skills that cannot be taught in class.

“They understand the ocean so well. The young men in Mombasa do not get these jobs. Let us ensure we recruit those who have proper skills,” said the MP.
