Court has convicted Sergeant Dismus Gitenge Motongwa, the man who was accused of running over a Kenyatta University student in July 2018 at the Nextgen Mall along Mombasa Road.

The sergeant was charged with knocking down 22-year-old Maureen Wambui Gachagua and driving off with her body stuck on the car for 3 kilometers and dumped the car in South C Estate, Nairobi.

Trial Magistrate Elekta Riany termed Motongwa as a dangerous driver adding that the accused defense was full of lies.

“The accused was speeding, is culpable of giving false information to public service and I find him guilty of causing death by dangerous driving,” ruled the Magistrate.

Maureen was hit by the officer’s car while coming from a party with her boyfriend Dennis Mburu Baragu at the mall.

Dennis said he saw the red car which sped off after hitting his girlfriend. He says he looked for her on the road but all he could find were her shoes. He gave up looking for her after an hour and decided to look for her at the hospitals.

“We exited the mall at around 4 am Sunday. I managed to cross a trench outside the mall to join Mombasa Road but my girlfriend decided to use the main path to join the road. I waited for her so that we could cross the road together but just after she stepped on the tarmac, I saw her cross and I decided to follow her because the road was clear,” said Dennis.

“Before she made it to the other side and before I could make any step myself, I saw a red car at very high speed hit her,” he added.

Dennis later found her body, her right leg was missing and beside her was a car with the number plate KCN 285B.

Post Mortem reports also show that Maureen was one month pregnant at the time of the accident.
