Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso is currently admitted at a hospital in London, UK, and it has now emerged that a group of fraudsters are attempting to cash in on her situation.

Communication from the governor’s office indicated that members of the public have been receiving text messages asking them to contribute towards offsetting her bill and getting a reward in return.

The suspect behind the scheme was identified as Geoffrey Kipkoech and the Bomet County government disowned the messages saying they were not authorized by the governor.

“Attention is drawn to fraud messages and texts being sent to unsuspecting members of the public urging them to make contributions for Her Excellency the Governor Dr Joyce Laboso in return for a reward, through Pay Bill No:100400(HFC) ACC no.9133793201 and MPESA number 0726830886 registered under the name of Geoffrey Kipkoech.

“They are ill-intentioned and are not sanctioned by the governor,” said Ezra Kirui, Director of Communications.

Adding: “However, the governor is highly grateful to the members of public for their prayers as she continues with her medical treatment.”

Several similar cases have been reported in the recent past and just last month, Foreign Affairs CS Monica Juma urged those who had been defrauded through a fake account bearing her name to report to the DCI.

This is after it emerged that the account was being used to ask for money from unsuspecting Kenyans. ?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its official Twitter account noted that CS Juma has only one account and does not have a Facebook account.

“Our attention has been drawn to a number of social media accounts that are impersonating the CS MFA (Amb Monica Juma-@Diplomacy_Kenya). Unfortunately, these accounts are being used to solicit money from unsuspicious individuals.

“Kindly note that the CS has one twitter account (@Diplomacy_Kenya) ONLY and NO Facebook account.
