Motorists in Nairobi and its environs have been asked to avoid a number of roads on Saturday, May 25, due to the Mater Heart Run 2019.

The event is set to start KICC at 7am and organisers expect it to end at 11am.

Normal traffic flow will, therefore, be partially interrupted for the safety of participants and drivers have been advised to avoid: City Hall WayUhuru HighwayValley RoadNgong Road (up to City Mortuary roundabout)Mbagathi WayLangata RoadAerodrome RoadParliament Road

Also, traffic officers will be deployed at affected junctions and roundabouts along the listed roads to control traffic.

The Mater Heart Run was started in 2002 as the main fundraising avenue for the Cardiac program.

Initially held only in Nairobi, the Heart Run has grown over the years and is now held in nine different towns; Nairobi, Mombasa, Machakos, Mumias, Meru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Eldoret and Nakuru.

The main Objective of the Mater Heart Run is to fundraise for the cardiac program. The cardiac program was started in 1995 to cater for children who cannot afford the surgery and the first open-heart surgery was performed in 1996.

This was in line with the Values of the Sisters of Mercy, which emphasize on compassion for all and seek to uplift the lives of the under privileged in society.

To date over 3000 heart procedures have been performed courtesy of the support from well-wishers.

Most of these surgeries were done at Mater Misericordiae hospital by Kenyan doctors, with a few being referred overseas or done by visiting Cardiologists.

This year’s Run is scheduled to take place in different centres around Kenya; Nairobi: Kenyatta International Convention Centre at 7 am, Mombasa: Loreto Convent at 7 am, Meru: Kinoru Stadium at 8am, Nakuru: Afraha Stadium at 8am, Machakos: Kenyatta Stadium at 8am.
