Video footage filmed and shared by a man who took her wife to Shalom Community hospital, in Athi River, has shocked many on social media after it emerged that a woman, not his wife, had given birth at the reception area as nurses were enjoying tea.
In the video footage, a man is heard questioning the nurses: “kwa nini mnaacha mama anaangusha mtoto chini nwakati mnakunywa chai (why are you taking tea when a woman is giving birth on the floor) …is this what the management teaches you...unamwambia aamke na unakunywa chai? (you are telling her to stand and you are taking tea)” The nurse who identifies herself as Edina is unable to answer anything as she walks to dress for the patient.
According to the man, he was seated at the waiting bay as his wife was being attended to when a woman on labor pain was rushed in on a wheelchair. Nurses present at the facility were unbothered by the emergency case and went on sipping their cup of tea unperturbed. His attempt to alert the nurses could not hasten their reaction until the woman gave birth on the floor.
Ureport has learned that Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has requested the Kenya Medical Board and county health officers to investigate Shalom hospital Athi River following the public outcry.
