Photos of President Uhuru Kenyatta interacting with students of St. Bakhita, Kiburia Girls in Kirinyaga County have caused outrage.

The images showed students behind a barbed wire fence as they greeted the President, something that did not go down well with netizens.

The post was captioned: “President @UKenyatta interacts with students of St. Bakhita, Kiburia Girls, in Kirinyaga County, enroute Kirinyaga University for the official opening of the 6th Annual Devolution Conference | @WilliamsRuto.”

Many wondered why the Head of State was not interacting with students freely, saying it was so unlike him.

President Kenyatta has often been lauded for his ‘accessibility’ and interaction with local wananchi, as he has demonstrated on various instances.

Here are some of the reactions:

“Alar! What are we missing out here? Why the barrier? Uhunye hatujakozea hivo.”

“Are the kids in prison? Eiih.”

“Why are the girls behind a wire mesh, are they a security threat? . They look like prisoners and not students!”

“The fence makes it look like he's inspecting livestock or something. Or that the students are caged/imprisoned.”

“On this one, someone goofed big. There can't be "interaction" with a chain-link fence separating the President from the students.”

“Bad optics. Why cage the girls away from their president?”

“Not very good image...why "cage" the girls?”
