Police arrest man who killed wife over round two of ugali at midnight
Police in Navakholo have arrested a man suspected to have hacked his wife to death over ugali.
Joseph Boyi, 44, of Emakuya village, Kakamega County, is alleged to have killed his wife Florence Nakonjio after a quarrel over what was termed as ‘bedroom ugali’.
According to Sharon Margarita, a daughter of the deceased, a fight ensued at midnight after her father, who had come home drank, demanded food despite having earlier taken supper.
Sharon and her siblings were woken up by painful screams from her parent’s bedroom.
“My mother gave a sharp cry saying your dad is killing me and when we got into her room, I heard my dad demanding for food and continued to beat her. I was shocked since at around 9pm he had been served his meal. I asked him what he wanted but he threatened to beat me too,” said Sharon.
“Later, our dad closed the door and continued raining blows on my mom, which prompted me to alert neighbours who came to mom’s rescue. By then she had lost a lot of blood and had serious head injuries.”
Titus Muganda, the area assistant chief, stated that the suspect had been arrested and the hoe he used to kill his wife recovered.
Muganda warned locals against taking law into their own hands and urged parents to seek alternative ways to reconcile and solve their differences.
“We should not lose lives in such careless manner. There are better ways of solving disputes. It’s very sad that bedroom issues have led to loss of life. The suspect will be charged,’’ said Muganda.
The incident sparked a lot of rage among the villagers, who wanted to lynch the suspect but he was saved by the police, who whisked him away.
A day after the incident, relatives of the deceased burnt every property in the suspect’s homestead stating that they were acting according to their culture. They burned several sacks of maize and beans, cow shed, set his cane on fire, together with his houses and other property.
