Masks in the playground: Pandemic babies in for a rude culture shock
The Covid-19 experience is slightly over a year old. A child born around January 2020, few months before the pandemic, is almost the same age as the dreaded disease. These children are capable of recognising faces and can now run and even shout around the house.
Interestingly, they have something in common again. They have never seen adults outside the house walking without masks. Has it ever occurred to us that these children may just grow up thinking it is normal for people to wear masks as part of our attire? The most common is the cheaper sky blue and layered type. These could be like jeans trousers in the eyes of babies; every lady in Nairobi wears jeans.
Imagine if the pandemic continues for another one year and these babies also grow older. They will be so confused and it will be so difficult to convince them that masks are not made in heaven by God and that human beings are born with masks around their mouths.
Just a minute, teachers may have just found a way of shutting up noise makers in the classroom. Ask them to wear masks. We miss days when our babies were allowed to experience early life with adults who are not shackled by masks.
