Man in court for stealing from pastor

NEWS

A man who allegedly posed as a director of a company handling containers has appeared before a Kibera court to answer to the charge of obtaining Sh400,000 from an unsuspecting pastor.

Court documents show that Martin Ochieng defrauded Pastor Eric Mwangi of Joshua Generation Church in Kilimani, Nairobi, of the cash on September 15, 2021, by pretending he was in a position to deliver to him a container, something he knew he could not do.

According to a report to the police, the church wanted to purchase a container for its use and approached Ochieng who had posed as a container maker.

The court heard that the man had promised that he would supply the church with a container at cost of Sh400,000.

After writing an invoice, it is alleged that the accused was paid through a cheque around September last year and he was expected to deliver the container but he failed to do so.

Around the same time, he is said to have gone offline, forcing the church to trace the office he had mentioned, only to be told that no such person existed.

The matter was reported at Kilimani police station. He was tracked down and later arrested.

He, however, denied any wrongdoing and was set free on Sh250,000 cash bail. The case will be mentioned on June 30.
