David Baariu: It is difficult to tell whether one is a genuine preacher or not

Police in the city have called on residents who may have  fallen prey to con preachers under the guise that they will double money to report such incidents immediately.

Central Sub County Police Commander David Baariu says they have formed a  special squad that will hunt and track down men and women who  pose as preachers only to defraud gullible victims.

“Establishing whether one is a genuine preacher or not is a difficult task. Anyone who has lost their money through such people to come forward,” said Baariu.

Some of the spots from where the con preachers operate are National Archives, Gill House, Bomb Blast Memorial and along River Road.

According to Baariu, it is becoming impossible to prosecute such cases.

A few years back, an elderly woman alleged to be part of a cartel of con preachers was  dramatically unmasked by a victim at Kencom bus stop.

The victim claimed she had lost Sh50,000 to the shosho, and caused a scene at the busy bus stop before police on patrol arrived and arrested the suspect.
