Kakamega man destroys mother-in-law's car after fighting with lover

A man who vandalized his mother-in-law’s vehicle after disagreeing with her daughter who is his lover has been sentenced to a one-year non-custodial sentence.

Appearing before Resident Magistrate Caroline Cheruiyot on Tuesday, Alumasi Makwanya who said he was remorseful pledged to abide by the law after he was read the sentence.

The prosecution said Makwanya was a first-time offender whose probation report recommended a non-custodial sentence under which he promised to mend fences with his mother-in-law.

The convict was sentenced after his own plea of guilty where he admitted to destroying the car of his mother-in-law, Lillian Terwa. Makwanya told the court that he committed the offense out of anger following provocation.

“I was assaulted by my mother-in-law after I went to inquire from her about my valuables which my wife had carted away when she left our home following a disagreement,” he said.

When the response was not positive, the court heard that Makwanya picked a stone and hit the mother-in-law’s vehicle damaging its windshield valued at Sh35,000.
