Over 25 people hospitalised after cholera outbreak in Homa Bay County

At least 25 people have been hospitalised following an outbreak of cholera in Sindo town, Homa Bay County.

They were rushed to Suba Sub-county Hospital after presenting signs and symptoms of cholera.

Homa Bay County Chief Officer for Health Kevin Osuri confirmed that 21 patients tested positive for cholera and were admitted to the hospital since their conditions were severe. Four have been discharged.

"We have experienced cases of cholera in Suba Sub-county. A total of 25 persons have been diagnosed with the disease. Four have been treated and discharged, but the remaining are still admitted," Dr Osuri said.

"The trend at which we have admitted the persons means the cases may increase. The patients are responding well to medication."

He said most of the patients hailed from Wadiang'a Beach in the town. Osuri said the health department is on high alert to help fight the spread of the diseases.

He noted that they had sent health officers to assess the situation and sensitize the residents on how to prevent the disease. "We are also working with various partners and sister departments like the Department of Water to help put measures in place to prevent cholera in Sindo town," Osuri said.

The chief officer urged locals to be alert by maintaining personal hygiene. "Our people should now be aware that cholera is with us. Let us maintain hygiene by ensuring we drink treated water besides eating well-cooked and warm food, among other precaution measures," Osuri said.

Last month, traders in Sindo town complained of poor sanitation.
