Edwin Kiprono, the nominee for the position of member of the National Police Service Commission (NPSC), has pledged to implement meaningful reforms within the police service if his nomination is approved.

Kiprono was nominated to the position by President William Ruto on April 11, 2023. He is replacing Naftali Rono, who resigned to assume duties in the national government.

The notice was sent to Parliament, as the President sought the approval of the appointment by the House.

During his appearance before the Administration and Internal Affairs Committee at County Hall in Nairobi on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, Kiprono advocated for insurance coverage to be extended to include mental illness for police officers, acknowledging the pressing issue of mental health within the force.

According to Kiprono, the policy, if implemented, would be a significant step towards addressing the mental health challenges faced by law enforcement officers and promoting their overall health and welfare.

Highlighting the need for merit-based transfers of police officers, Kiprono emphasized that bribery should never be a factor in such decisions.

When asked about his wealth, Kiprono estimated his net worth to be approximately between Sh51-55 million.

Kisumu Town MP, Rosa Buyu, inquired about the recent police interference during Azimio rallies and asked Kiprono what measures he would take to prevent such disruptions in the future.

On his part, Kiprono recognised the right to protest and demonstrate, but emphasized the importance of demonstrators being considerate of others and not causing disruptions to businesses.

"Protesters have the right to peacefully convey their message without resorting to any form of destructive or disruptive actions that could jeopardize the livelihood of other businesses and individuals," he stated.
