World Earth Day: Google Doodle highlights impact of climate change

As the world celebrates World Earth Day, today's annual Earth Day Doodle raises awareness of climate change, one of the most pressing matters in recent times. The Doodle on the search engine's home page displays artwork made up of leaves.

It shows a line-up of activities in which people can engage daily to make a difference, like walking or riding a bike instead of driving whenever possible, practicing a plant-based diet, and opting to air-dry laundry instead of using the dryer.

"Today's annual Earth Day Doodle highlights how individuals and communities can work together in big and small ways to take action against climate change. On this day, people all over the globe honour the achievements of the environmental movement and consider areas where further climate justice is needed," Google noted.

The Google Doodle for Earth Day 2023 is also utilising real-time imagery from Google Earth Time-lapse, a global, zoomable video that shows how Earth has changed since 1984, to show the impact of climate change across four different locations.

It shows the glacier retreat at the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro, the glacier retreat in Sermersooq in Greenland, Coral bleaching on Lizard Island, Australia, and forests being destroyed by bark beetle due to rising temperatures in Harz forests in Germany.

"Timelapse allows us to see our planet in an entirely new dimension - and time. Now anyone can witness nearly four decades of planetary change," Rebecca Moore, Director of Google Earth says.
