Chogoria Boys: Where Wanjohi Githae enjoyed free gym

Old school

Chogoria Boys High school is a Public Secondary School found in Magumoni Town, Tharaka Constituency in Tharaka-Nithi County. The boys only boarding institution was established in 1962 by the local community under patronage of then member of parliament for Tharaka, the late Honourable Benard Mate. The school which has currently over 1300 learners is sponsored by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA).

Chogoria boys did not start on its own compound or infrastructure. Instead, it started by using the administrative and learning facilities of Chogoria boarding mixed intermediate school (commonly known as "Membere" which had been running from way back in 1937 after being established by the church of England.

The school's initial funding was by the Meru community alongside the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. However, in 1973, it was taken over by the government who operated it as a day school. The government paid teachers were also posted to this school.

Over the years, Chogoria boys has expanded from a single stream to double stream in 1974 and presently to the level of a four streamed secondary school. Academically, the school has been recording mixed performances, sometimes going on an upward trend before going to a downward trajectory. However, lately, the school has strived to live up to its motto "Pressing on towards the mark" by recording consistent positive results on national examinations.

Former students still recall the school's gym facilities where some went to exercise their bodies build up their muscles and push time after classes. However, some detested using these facilities because it "drained" the little food they had consumed, leaving them dry. Students claim that the school food was so little that even a "child could not get filled up" The lucky who had money had to compliment the same with school canteen food.

There is also an iconic "Power Mechanics Workshop" where electricity lessons and drills were taught. Mr. Muturi who took the students through the lessons always made the learning experience exciting and motivating.

Notable alumni of this institution who wore light blue shirts, grey trousers and maroon pullovers include Wanjohi Githae, Kenya's public communication director, Denis Borges, a journalist based in Nairobi, Simba Mukathe, an engineer with Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), Bob Kiama, a water engineer based in Nairobi, Peter Gathambo, a digital creative based in Meru, and Moses Baraza, an employee of Kenya Railways.
