The Local Organising Committee for last year’s African Senior Athletics Championships has closed shop. But the LOC is being pursued by suppliers who provided services and goods and have not been paid.

The debts accruing from the 17th edition of the continental championships, variously described as the most successful ever, are about Sh150million.

"We have closed our secretariat because our mandate ended on December 31. I have received those demand letters, but have forwarded them to the Ministry of Sports headquarters," said David Okeyo, the LOC Chief Executive Officer.

Among the suppliers demanding payment, and who have threatened court action if payment is not made by Monday are Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) and Carnivore Restaurant.

"We were to close on October 31, but we got an extension of two months which ended on December 31. As we speak, I am back at my Athletics Kenya (AK) offices," said Okeyo, also AK Secretary general.

Creditors have been visiting the Nyayo Stadium swimming pool area office, which housed the LOC Secretariat, only to find a huge padlock, precipitating the legal advice some sought.
