With the extended of deadline for submission of final entries expiring at midnight, 37 nations had confirmed participation in Nairobi 17th African Athletics Championships hours before the window is shut.

Confirming to the press yesterday afternoon when Sports Minister, Prof Helen Sambili, toured Nyayo National Stadium venue, Local Organising Committee (LOC) chief executive, David Okeyo, was still optimistic the targeted figure of 46 countries would beat the deadline which was extended last week, when 35 had sent in their numbers.

During Sambili’s tour, it also emerged the dress rehearsal for the event, that will be officially opened by President Mwai Kibaki, would be conducted on Sunday.

"I’m satisfied preparations are on course, and final touches will be done. We are set to host all those who will participate and this is a chance for Kenya to showcase its talent," Sambili, who gave LOC her thumps up, said.

"I appeal to Kenyans to come and support the teams and celebrate the opportunity we have to host these great championships. As we celebrate, we do not want to be noisy with Vuvuzelas," she added, locking out the South African trumpet that ruled the recently concluded World Cup from Nairobi 2010.

Among the sections she toured include the media tribune, warm-up track, call room, VIP seating and the field.

LOC chair, Isaiah Kiplagat disclosed the electronic scoreboard and timing equipment would be installed today, in readiness for the test event.
