World champ Cheruiyot trails Ethiopian in Doha

Ethiopians atoned for last year’s disappointment when Meseret Defar ran away with a fourth successive World Indoor title in Doha yesterday.

Kenya’s Vivian Cheruiyot, who upset them in Berlin World Championships’ 5,000m title last August, settled for a silver medal in the 3,000m after timing 8:51.85 behind Defar’s 8:51.17. A second Kenyan in the final, Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet was denied a bronze by another Ethiopian, Sentayehu Ejigu, who timed 8:52.08 to the Kenyan’s 8:52.16.

Moments later, Harun Keitany took a bronze (3:42.32) in the 1,500m, won by another Ethiopian, Deresse Mekonnen, who clocked 3:41.86. Moroccan Abdalaati Iquider took silver in 3:41.96.

Earlier, Boaz Kiplagat Lalang’ burst to the final of 800m to be run today when he finished second in the first heat, clocking 1:46.73 behind Sudanese Abubaker Kaki’s 1:46.45.The third qualifier from this heat was Adam Kszczot from Poland. Spain’s Luis Alberto Marco won the second heat in 1:51.05 with Jakub Holusa of Czech Republic second in 1:51.08 and another Sudanese Ismail Ahmed Ismail third in 1:51.25.

Meanwhile, British world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis posted the fourth-best pentathlon score of all-time when she won the event with 4,937 points.

Only world record holder Irina Belova of Russia and Sweden’s Carolina Kluft have posted better scores than the 24-year-old Ennis.

She topped Kluft’s championship record by four points.

Ennis had victories in the 60 metres hurdles and high jump, a season’s best in the shot put and personal bests in the long jump and the concluding 800 metres.

Olympic heptathlon gold medallist Nataliya Dobrynska of Ukraine was second with 4,851 points and Russia’s Tatyana Chernova third at 4,762.

European champion Dwain Chambers gave Britain another chance for gold when he posted the fastest 60 metres semi-final time, clocking 6.51 seconds. The final is later on Saturday.

The United States swept the top two places in the men’s heptathlon and won the shot put.

Olympic decathlon gold medallist Bryan Clay scored 6,204 points to edge world champion Trey Hardee, who had 6,184. Russia’s Aleksey Drozdov was third with 6,141.

Holder Christian Cantwell took the shot put with a last-throw toss of 21.83 metres to overtake Andrei Mikhnevich of Belarus. Mikhnevich threw 21.68.
