BERLIN, Aug 22
Vivian Cheruiyot won the women's 5,000 metres to give Kenya another surprising long-distance victory at the World Championships in Berlin on Saturday.
After a slow, tactical race Cheruiyot, the 2007 silver medallist, outkicked team mate Sylvia Kibet and holder Meseret Defar of Ethiopia to claim gold in 14 minutes 57.97 seconds.
Defending champion Meseret Defar of Ethiopia eased up when Cheruiyot went past a few metres from the line and was also overtaken by Sylvia Kibet to make it a Kenyan 1-2.
Kibet took silver in 14:58.33 with Defar winning bronze in 14:58.41.
Kenya won the women's 10,000 earlier in the championships, ending a decade of Ethiopian dominance.
