Forty-two athletes were chosen to represent the country at World Youth and Africa Junior championships after simultaneous trials ended at Nyayo National Stadium.

The squads named by Athletics Kenya (AK) yesterday represent a fine mix of experienced and upcoming runners who wasted no time in setting sights at bagging top medals from the events set for Italy and Mauritius.

Nairobi Riruta Central’s Nelly Chebet, who won 5,000m bronze at Bydgoszcz World Juniors in Poland last year, is the most recognisable runner in the line-up for the sixth World Youth Championships to be held in Sudtirol, Italy from July 8 to 12.

Chebet sealed her place after soaring to victory in the 1,500m (4:23.7) race at the trials.

Not worried

"I feel very happy and I was not worried during the race since I knew I could kick past them. With the help of God, I hope to bring gold back home," Chebet told FeverPitch.

Third placed Stella Chebet (4:27.3) was chosen alongside the winner for the world event.

Reigning Africa Junior 3,000m steeplechase silver medallist, Beatrice Kiprop, earned her ticket to Italy by winning the girls’ 2,000m water and barriers race in 6:36.3.

Fourth finisher over 5,000m at Bydgoszcz, Lucia Kamene Muia, who chased Kiprop to the line in 6:37.1, also sealed a slot.

At the same time, a star-studded line-up awaits Mauritius as the country’s cream of junior talent effortlessly booked berths for the Africa Junior event that runs from July 30 to August 2.

Reigning World Junior champions, Jonathan Muia (men’s 3,000m steeplechase) and Mercy Cherono (women’s 3,000m) are on course of adding Africa titles after winning their events in 8:28.1 and 8:56.0.

"It was not an easy race and my aim remains winning gold for Kenya," Japan based Muia who is attached to the Hitachi Kebo corporate team said. He is also studying wiring at Hitachi University after completing his ‘O’ Levels last year.

Former World Youth and World Junior 800m silver medallist, Winnie Chebet, Bydgoszcz silver winner, Elizabeth Mueni (3,000m steeplechase), Jackline Chebii (fifth Bydgoszcz over 5,000m) and secondary schools champion, John Kemboi (men’s 10,000m) also made the Mauritius team.
