Kenya Defence Force (KDF) pulled a major upset to beat former champions Prisons Kenya in a tough match in the national men’s volleyball league at the Nyayo National Stadium.

The league that entered into its fourth leg over the Easter weekend concluded yesterday with KDF using all missiles at their disposal to dismiss the former champions coached by experienced coach David Lung’aho 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 17-25, 25-21 15-9).

The going got tough for the Prisons side with the military side calling the shots to win the first set 25-23.

Coached by Elisha Aliwa, KDF had good serves and returns through the combination of Micah Lagat and Rogers Kipyego.

Prisons came back strongly to take the second set 25-16 and went ahead to win the third set 25-17. KDF levelled with a 25-21 win to put the game at 2-2.

KDF took control of the fifth set after taking a comfortable 6-2 lead and never looked back to wrap up the set 15-9.

Prisons Kenya who are preparing to travel to Tunisia next month for the African Men Club Volleyball Championship relied heavily on Hudson Chesoli, Rogers Kipkirui and Jairus Kipkosgey.

In an earlier match, Prisons Kenya easily dismissed their Mombasa counterparts Mombasa Prisons 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 19-25, 25-15.

In other matches, Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) beat Prisons Nairobi 3-0 (25-21, 25-13, 25-10) to remain in title contention.

Defending champions General Service Unit did not disappoint after dismissing Prisons Rift Valley 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-15) to keep their hopes of retaining the title alive.

Trail Blazers who lost 3-2 to KPA on Saturday hit back to dispatch Kenya Army 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-19) in another tough encounter.
