Malkia face off Kazakhstan in tourney opener.

National women’s volleyball team Malkia Strikers coach Japheth Munala will be aiming for a second round qualification as his side face-off with Kazakhstan in today's (1.20pm) 2018 World Volleyball Championship opening Group D match at the Hamamatsu Arena.

Kenya will be seeking their first ever win in the championship as they return to the global showpiece after missing the 2014 edition in Italy.

And having traveled to Japan ten days earlier, Munala is confident of an improved performance from the nine-time African champions.

"We are delighted to be taking part in this competition again. We hope to give our best in each and every game as we continue developing our game," Munala told Standard Sports on phone.

"Every championship is a learning experience and gives room for improvement. We have been there before and now is the time showcase our strength. We are not here us participants but as competitors."

With a motivated team blend of experience and youthful energy at his disposal, Munala is optimistic of a positive start against Kazakhstan.

"It is my hope that we will have a great Championship, win at least two matches and achieve our goal of qualifying for the second round," said Munala.

"There is no easy team here, but I believe the girls are ready and up to the task.  This is a tournament that every player dreams to play.

"Of course our early arrival is a great motivation to the team as the girls have been able to quickly get used to the new environment. The good training and friendly matches we had have put us in a competition mood. Everybody is here to play and it shall be."

However, Munala will have to wait for the duo of Leonida Kasaya and Christine Siwa to undergo late fitness tests before deciding to field them.

"We only have two injuries (Kasaya and Siwa), but they are not that very serious," said Munala.

Technical Director David Lung’aho added: “The mood in the team is motivating and very encouraging. Our target still remains, to secure a second round qualification. Everybody is psyched up."
