Prisons Kenya coach Paul Muthinja has labelled his side’s performance as outstanding after they overcame Uganda’s Nemo Stars by straight sets  to qualify for tomorrow’s quarterfinals of the 2018 African Club Championship in Cairo, Egypt.

The warders went into yesterday’s final Group A match needing a win for them to finish second and sail through after Thursday’s night 3-0 (25-12,25-18,25-17) defeat to group winners and hosts Ahly E.

It was a great reaction from Prisons who showed their prowess to brush aside the Ugandans by straight sets of 25-22,25-23 and 25,18 to set up a quarterfinals date with Group D winners between local rivals General Service Unit and Elgeish of Egypt.

GSU and Elgeish were due to face-off last evening in a group winner encounter.

“We thank God for everything. Indeed, I feel great for the far we have come,” Muthinja told The Standard Sports on phone from Cairo.

“ I also thank my players for the effort and their great performance.

It has just been outstanding. We went into the Nemo match with alot of determination and eager to win. They knew exactly what was lying ahead of them, and I am happy everybody played his heart out.

“We are prepared for any opponent we meet in the quarterfinals. We pray to God to continue giving us good health and strength. Our semifinals target is still on course.”

Prisons finished second in Group A after registering wins over AS Police (Ivory Coast), Redskin (Lesotho), Espoir from Congo and Nemo Stars (Uganda). [Rodgers Eshitemi]
