Kenya Prisons, men and women’s volleyball teams have intensified their training in preparation for the 2017 season.

The new season begins on March 3 to 5 with the Kenya Volleyball Federation League first leg in Nyeri before both teams travel to Tunisia for the African Club Championships.

Prisons (men) will begin their league title defense with a clash against Administration Police as the women lock horns with rivals and champions Kenya Pipeline, who beat them 3-2 in last year’s thrilling national playoffs final in Mombasa.

The Gideon Chenje’s charges will then shift their focus to the men’s continental tournament to be held on March 15 to 28 before paving way for the women’s showpiece slated for April 5 to 18 in North Africa.

With the Kenya women’s national team head coach David Lung’aho having offered to help the men’s team, the league champions are leaving nothing to chance as they seek to improve their performance on the continental scene.

“I have been training with men’s team in Ruiru for the past four weeks, working on the team’s improvement on basic skills ahead of the continental show piece,” Lung’aho, who is also Prisons women's coach, told Feverpitch.

“The ladies started two weeks ago and for now we are still on physical preparations but our intentions are very clear; we want to reclaim the title in Tunisia.”

The coach revealed the recruitment of five youthful players who featured in last year’s secondary school games.

They are Kwanthanze duo of Teresa Ewet and Pamela Masaisai, Lugulu’s Joan Ngeiywo, Meldina Sande (Mukumu Girls) and Carol Sirengo from Mautuma Secondary.
